A breathtaking journey discovering the springs of the river Alcantara
The road leading to the Alcantara Springs begins from a forestry path situated near the Town of Randazzo; the starting point of the itinerary can be reached by the clearway Catania-Randazzo making a detour via Randazzo.
The first stretch of the road is characterized by the typical Mediterranean vegetation which in this area takes the name of High Pasture scenery.
At a short distance there is the equipped area of Santa Maria del Bosco, a place set in the wood green hearth where you can have a rest.
We go on along an unsurfaced road and all of a sudden we sense such a different scenery that makes us think as if we were in the Alps. After this we arrive at San Giacomo’s site, a place of extraordinary naturalistic beauty.
During our journey to the Alcantara river and nearby where the typical river vegetation with poplars and willows and minor water falls can be seen.
A small tiny church, set under a limestone wall, and the remains of an ancient water mill can be admired by walking on the right side of the river.
The Alcantara river rises right on this place where small falls and streams merge from the Nebrodi Park.
